Training and Courses
I am a firm believer in lifelong CPD and continue to keep myself aware of current trends and legislation around education and libraries. I do this by:
attending training days and conferences
undertaking online training
reading current professional literature
Background
I have worked in libraries for much of the last 40 years, much of that time as a children’s librarian or running public libraries. During the last 9 years I was employed as the librarian for Bristol School Library service, until its closure in March 2014.
Authorities I have worked for include
Hampshire County Libraries
Southeastern Education and Library Board, N Ireland
London Borough of Hillingdon
County of Avon
Bristol City Libraries
Skills and Experience
During my career I have been lucky enough to have an involvement with my professional body Cilip and that part of it which represents children’s librarians.
- I was the Exhibition Manager for the annual conference for 10 years
- I created close ties with the major children’s publishers in the UK
- 2010 I was the chair of the Youth Libraries group of Cilip
- 2010, the chair of judges for the Carnegie and Kate Greenaway medals
I review children’s books for “The School Librarian”, “Books for Keeps”, “Armadillo”and “Carousel”, which means that I have an extensive knowledge of children’s literature, across the key stages .
During my career at Bristol I was able to bring a large number of authors to schools and libraries as part of developing a reading culture in the four unitary authorities. I am still able to offer this service, so please contact me if you would like information about how to arrange an author event.
